Green Server Design: Beyond Operational Energy to Sustainability Jichuan Chang, Justin Meza, Parthasarathy Ranganathan, Cullen Bash, Amip Shah HP Laboratories HPL-2010-116 Environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, lifecycle analysis "Green" server and datacenter design requires a focus on environmental sustainability. Prior studies have focused on operational energy consumption as a proxy for sustainability, but this metric only captures part of the environmental impact. In this paper, we argue that to understand the total impact, we need to examine the entire lifecycle of the system, beyond operational energy to also include material use and manufacturing. We make two main contributions. We present a methodology that allows such a lifecycle analysis, specifically providing attribution of sustainability bottlenecks to individual system architecture components. Using this methodology, we compare the sustainability tradeoffs between popular energy-efficiency optimizations and discuss sustainability bottlenecks and optimizations for future system designs. Application of rapid impact assessment matrix and sustainability model in environmental impact assessment and operational optimization of solid waste transfer stations in Tehran
Background and Objective: Municipal waste transfer stations (WTS), operate as middle elements in waste collection and transfer to the final disposal site. Besides their benefits in waste transportation cost reduction, WTS can cause negative environmental impacts such as noise, air, and water pollution. Environmental impact assessment is an effective solution to reduce the environmental impacts ...
متن کاملGreen process design, green energy, and sustainability: A systems analysis perspective
This paper presents a systems analysis perspective that extends the traditional process design framework to green process design, green energy and industrial ecology leading to sustainability. For green process design this involves starting the design decisions as early as chemical and material selection stage on one end, and managing and planning decisions at the other end. However, uncertaint...

Industrial growth and environmental damages, as two important indicators in sustainable development are followed by steel industry. This article leads industries to green industry. In this case, energy, material, capital consumption and environmental damages as sustainability patterns of environment have been investigated in three different dust collectors to select the most environmentally sui...
متن کاملSmartGreen: A Novel Green Computing Architecture for Environmental Data Acquisition in IT/Automation DataCenter
Ongoing concerns about climate change and poor environmental sustainability in today’s world could eventually result in computing processes that impacts the environment negatively. The IT/automation industry can significantly impact on the worldwide carbon footprint by adopting a ‘greener’ approach to computing for environmental sustainability. This paper then presents green computing as an eff...
متن کاملBeyond recycling: Developing deep sustainability competence
The purpose of this chapter is to advance a competency framework for sustainability, arguing that sustainability initiatives should move beyond basic awareness to deeper knowledge, including understanding of root causes, and development of political skills. This chapter’s discussion and critique of sustainability competence is grounded in data from more than 500 undergraduate residents’ respons...
